Iowa GOP pledges abortion ban after state Supreme Court blocks heartbeat bill

The court’s tie vote meant a district court ruling halting the bill will remain permanently in effect.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) and Republican legislative leaders pledged to renew efforts to restrict abortion access after the state Supreme Court blocked a 2018 law that would have banned the procedure after six weeks.

The Supreme Court on Friday deadlocked over whether to reinstate the six-week ban. Three justices voted to allow it to take effect, and three justices voted to maintain an existing injunction.
