Leaders at the American Petroleum Institute said Monday that the oil and gas industry group is preparing to push back against any state efforts to require fossil fuel companies to pay for the adverse effects of climate change.
“We believe that this is just a punitive tax on American oil and gas companies that will ultimately increase prices for American consumers, and we will oppose them in every jurisdiction that pursues them,” Dustin Meyer, API senior vice president of policy, economics and regulatory affairs, said on a call with reporters.
