Nearly half of states have enacted laws that aim to stamp out discrimination at work and school against hairstyles such as afros, braids, Bantu knots, and locs.
Known as the CROWN Act — Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair — the law bans race-based hair discrimination, which can manifest in work and school dress codes and can also hinder people’s attempts to buy or rent housing.
