Private, homeschool subsidy enrollment set to jump

Seven states now offer Education Savings Accounts to all children.

More families may apply for private and homeschool subsidies this year than state lawmakers expected, setting the stage for fights next session over funding that is rapidly expanding Education Savings Accounts.

Any cost overruns this year should be relatively small, according to Republican lawmakers who champion school choice. But Democratic lawmakers and some Republicans say the subsidies are already squeezing public education funding and could become unaffordable in the future.
