Billions in federal infrastructure dollars are helping states and local governments make a dent in the backlog of bridge repair and replacement projects, but it is a long road to fixing them all.
The American Road & Transportation Builders Association’s annual Bridge Report, released last month, found that more than 222,000 U.S. bridges are in need of repair, including 76,000 that are candidates for replacement. That represents 36% of the country’s bridge inventory or more than 6,000 miles of bridge deck.
