Cooper vetoes nuclear, regulatory bills

The Republican majority in the legislature could vote to override.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D) vetoed two bills passed by the Republican-led legislature Monday, citing potential adverse environmental effects. 

One would encourage the use of nuclear power in the state by changing the phrase “renewable energy” in existing energy law with “clean energy,” and adding nuclear to the new term’s definition. Under the state’s Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Portfolio Standard, nuclear energy is excluded as a clean energy source.
