Sports betting legalization efforts on tap in holdout states

Despite various obstacles, advocates plan to keep the pressure on in 2024.

Lawmakers in some of the 12 states that still ban sports betting are intent on pushing to legalize it next year, even as they face long odds.

Five years after the Supreme Court lifted a federal ban on sports wagering, barriers to legalization in the holdout states include constitutional gaming bans, conflicts between Native American tribes and other gaming operators, and religion-rooted opposition.
