Red state leaders plan tax cuts, education funding in 2024

But the reality of smaller surpluses weighs on legislators’ minds.

Republican lawmakers flush with unexpected revenues are preparing new pushes to cut tax rates and invest in education in legislative sessions that begin next week, conscious that they have just a short period of time to get work done before election season kicks off.

In interviews with legislative leaders around the country over the last several weeks, many said they hope to build on tax cuts, though they are aware that a potential economic downturn — one that is already being felt in states such as California and New York — could impact their bottom lines in the future.
