Gun control advocates push to do more in states

After legislative successes the past two years, the White House is providing resources for states.

Gun control advocates want to build on a historic 2023 that saw 25 states pass more than 100 laws seeking to protect against gun violence.

Less than three months after the deadliest mass shooting in state history, legislators in Maine will consider strengthening Maine’s “yellow flag” law, which allows a judge to remove guns from someone who is suffering a mental health crisis. New Mexico will consider an assault-weapons ban and, along with Michigan and Maryland, is expected to explore repealing gun-industry immunity protections.
