States reap billions from sports betting

It’s legal in 38 states and D.C.

State governments are on pace to rake in more than $2 billion in taxes on sports betting, new government data shows, as legal online gambling expands to more areas than ever before.

New data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows states collected nearly $506 million in sales taxes on sports bets in the third quarter of 2023, up more than 20% from the same period a year before. States raked in almost $1.2 billion in the first half of last year, the data shows.
