A renewed push to require default content filters on kids’ smartphones and tablets is gaining steam as part of a broader effort by state lawmakers to make technology and online spaces safer for minors.
Versions of the Children’s Device Protection Act were approved by the Senate chambers in Idaho and Utah this year, and one is awaiting a vote in the Arizona House where Speaker Ben Toma (R) is the prime sponsor. The legislation has also been introduced this year in Alabama, Indiana, Maryland and South Carolina. A similar measure fell short by a single vote in the Idaho Senate last year.
