State lawmakers across the country are rushing to shore up protections for in vitro fertilization amid a nationwide backlash against an Alabama court ruling that put the procedure at risk.
Much of the early reaction to the Alabama Supreme Court ruling that embryos created through IVF should be afforded the same legal protections as children was driven by Democrats who are seeking to make reproductive rights a central issue in the 2024 elections. But numerous Republicans have joined in, including in states with some of the country’s most restrictive abortion laws.
