Supreme Court contests cost more than ever

This is the third consecutive biennium in which total spending has topped $100 million.

Political parties and supportive outside groups are spending more than ever on state Supreme Court races amid narrow ideological divides in critical presidential battleground states.

A new report released Thursday by the Brennan Center for Justice finds total spending on Supreme Court contests hit a record $157 million in the 2023-2024 election cycle, the highest ever recorded in a two-year period — and a mark likely to be broken in the current biennium, in which outside groups have already shattered spending records anew.
