Pro-coal legislation picks up in push to meet growing energy needs

Lawmakers are reconsidering ways to boost coal as a major energy source after it’s declined for more than a decade, part of an effort to meet an electricity demand surging with the rise of artificial intelligence.

At least 20 bills have been introduced in 12 states — most of them by Republicans — that would directly or indirectly support coal. They include measures that would delay or waive climate goals, prioritize reliable energy and make it harder to close coal plants.
