Lawmakers seek solutions to rising electricity rates

The affordability issue is shaping up to be a top issue again in the November elections.

State lawmakers seeking to address affordability ahead of the midterm elections are focusing on one of the main drivers of rising electricity costs: data center development.

They’re taking several angles at the issue. Legislation under consideration in multiple states aims to protect ratepayers by charging data centers a special, higher electricity rate to help ensure the facilities pay for the strain they place on the grid.
