How a new law in Maryland targets energy affordability

Rate relief and executive pay are among the issues addressed in the expansive package.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore signed far-reaching energy affordability legislation Tuesday in an attempt to combat booming electricity costs for consumers.

The bill, known as the Utility RELIEF Act, returns $100 million in surcharges to electrical utility ratepayers, ensures more data centers and other high-energy users pay for the power they use, and bans utilities from passing executive bonuses to ratepayers.
