Why Mass. Dems are fighting over an audit

The most powerful Democrats in Massachusetts are at each other’s throats over a proposal to audit the state Legislature, a high-stakes feud that has the potential to shape the upper rungs of state government.

At issue is whether Auditor Diana DiZoglio has the legal authority to conduct such an audit, after an overwhelming share of voters approved a ballot measure in 2024. DiZoglio says it’s clear she has that authority; state lawmakers disagree, approving legislation earlier this month to narrow the scope of that ballot measure.
