States rush to write rules for AI in schools

Lawmakers want to harness its capabilities without shortchanging students’ educations.

More than a dozen new laws were enacted this year to help prepare students for the age of artificial intelligence while protecting them from its downsides.

They were among dozens of bills lawmakers considered that would take varied angles at the issue, including banning AI in the classroom, developing guidance for how to use it in schools, and making AI literacy a graduation requirement.
