New laws require labels on AI-generated content

It has emerged as a leading method to combat deepfakes, protect creators and provide more transparency.

Three states so far this year enacted laws that mandate artificial intelligence-generated content be labeled for transparency purposes, following California’s lead.

The new laws in Connecticut, Utah and Washington aim to take the guesswork out of whether an image, video or audio is authentic or synthetic — a growing challenge in the age of generative AI. A similar measure was passed in New York but has not yet been signed.
