Lawmakers look to take heat off principals by banning phones in class

Supporters say the rapid adoption of cell phones has come with a steep cost for students.

Legislators in both liberal and conservative states are advancing legislation to ban cell phones from school classrooms in an effort to minimize what educators and experts say is a debilitating distraction for students in the age of social media.

The Louisiana Senate voted unanimously Monday to bar phones in school classrooms, advancing a bill that legislators said would be a relief to teachers, administrators and students.
