School choice program costs diverge nationwide as fiscal year ends

We analyzed the status of enrollment and spending in six states where universal private school choice programs are up and running.

Universal school choice program costs across the country are varied as Fiscal Year 2024 comes to an end, with some states running over and others under budget.

Republican state lawmakers have made private education subsidies a top priority in recent years, even as Democrats and some fiscal conservatives say such programs are too expensive and could end up squeezing funding for public schools.
