Flags, bees and Pluto: States adopt new symbols

Amid busy legislative session, lawmakers can still take a pause to consider more mundane matters.

When thousands of young professionals descend on Delaware’s Dewey Beach, they slake their thirst with an Orange Crush, the vodka-based cocktail that evokes the hot summer months lazed away at the town’s beach bars.

But when Delaware lawmakers voted last week to name the Orange Crush the official state symbol, they provoked the ire of neighboring Maryland, where the cocktail was first invented at a bar in West Ocean City.
