Illinois joins nationwide push for producer responsibility in battery recycling

Gov. Pritzker signed a bill requiring businesses that sell or distribute batteries to develop and fund a recycling stewardship program.

Illinois became the latest state to enact legislation to establish a program to recycle and dispose of batteries, following 15 others and continuing a trend of states adopting so-called extended producer responsibility laws.

“As the world relies more on technology, we need to take proactive steps to ensure we are responsibly disposing the harmful chemicals contained in batteries,” Sen. Dave Koehler (D), the bill’s Senate sponsor, said in a statement. “This law ensures Illinois stays one step ahead when it comes to technology and reducing waste.”
