California lawmakers approved a bill in the legislative session’s waning hours that would authorize the state to require bidirectional charging capability for new electric vehicle batteries, allowing them to power homes, lower energy bills and help reduce power plant emissions while not being driven.

The bill “will unleash the power of EVs to be mini power plants on wheels, providing clean energy to homes, slashing consumer utility bills, and stabilizing the grid,” Sen. Nancy Skinner (D), the bill’s sponsor, said in a statement, touting it as part of “a multipronged approach to truly make progress” in combating climate change.
