California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed first-in-the-nation legislation Wednesday that allows for neighborhood-wide decarbonization pilot programs designed to help retire natural gas pipelines.
Introduced by Sen. Dave Min (D), the law authorizes the California Public Utilities Commission to approve up to 30 neighborhood-scale electrification projects. The program authorizes communities to explore electric alternatives when a natural gas pipeline needs to be repaired or replaced.
