AMA report details its scope-of-practice lobbying in ’24

The association targeted legislation that would affect nurse practitioners, physicians assistants, optometrists and more.

The American Medical Association teamed up with state and national medical provider associations to defeat at least 80 state scope of practice bills in 2024, continuing its years-long lobbying campaign against attempts to expand the types of procedures that can be performed by clinicians who aren’t physicians.

According to a report it released this month, the organization targeted legislation that would affect a variety of professions, including nurse practitioners, nurse anesthetists, physicians assistants, naturopaths, pharmacists, optometrists and psychologists.
