Lawmakers shift focus to lesser-known drug pricing middlemen

Supporters of legislation say it would extend the same transparency requirements applied to PBMs.

After years of aggressively targeting pharmacy benefit managers for their role in drug price increases, some state lawmakers are turning their attention to another obscure pharmaceuticals player they say also deserves scrutiny.

Pharmacy services administrative organizations, known as PSAOs, contract with independent pharmacies to help them negotiate with drug wholesalers and other entities in the pharmaceutical supply and payment chain.
