Grid-enhancing technologies in focus as electric infrastructure strains

States are exploring ways to alleviate pressure on the electric grid.

Lawmakers in at least 17 states have introduced legislation this year to take steps toward implementing new grid-enhancement technologies to provide relief to the nation’s aging electricity transmission infrastructure.

The measures, which vary widely, require studies of grid-enhancing technology implementation and cost-effectiveness; require utilities to include those strategies in official planning documents; and streamline siting and permitting requirements for some implementations, such as upgrading transmission wires, also known as reconductoring.
