Pedestrian deaths dip but remain inflated

Pedestrian fatalities in the U.S. fell slightly in 2024 to 7,148 but still remained nearly 20% above 2016 levels, according to preliminary data in a report released Thursday.

The annual report from the Governors Highway Safety Association highlights a stubborn safety issue on the roads: how to protect the most vulnerable users from drivers who are speeding, distracted, impaired, or who simply don’t spot the pedestrian before it’s too late.
