Republicans move to block ranked choice voting

Initiatives to establish the election method have also failed in multiple states.

Lawmakers in six states have approved bans on ranked choice voting this year, adding to troubles for supporters who saw ballot measures to adopt the practice go down to defeat in the 2024 elections.

Republican-led legislatures in Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, North Dakota, West Virginia and Wyoming all approved bills this year to prohibit ranked choice voting in federal, state and municipal elections. All of those states except Kansas, where Gov. Laura Kelly (D) became the first Democrat to sign a ban on ranked choice voting, are led by Republicans.
