Google, Meta back California’s Digital Age Assurance Act

It would require device makers to collect users’ ages upon initial account setup.

That information would then be shared with app developers that offer their products in Apple and Google’s app stores so that they would know the age range of each user for purposes of creating an age-appropriate experience.

The California bill, known as the Digital Age Assurance Act, represents an alternative to laws passed in Louisiana, Texas and Utah this year to require age verification at the App Store level — which Meta, Snap and X supported.
