Newsom signs California AI safety bill

Similar legislation was passed in New York and introduced in Illinois, Massachusetts and Michigan.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) on Monday signed an artificial intelligence safety bill, a year after he vetoed a similar but broader measure.

The new law authored by Sen. Scott Wiener (D) aims to prevent the most powerful AI systems of the future from unleashing catastrophic harms, such as biological or nuclear attacks.
