Blue states push for corporate greenhouse gas emission reporting

The effort is likely to expand next year.

Democratic-led states want to force large corporations to disclose their greenhouse gas emissions, seeking to fill the void left by the federal government and help slow the pace of climate change.

Lawmakers in at least four states — Colorado, Illinois, New Jersey and New York — introduced corporate climate-disclosure legislation this year. While none of the bills were passed, the New Jersey legislative session runs through the end of the year and lawmakers in the other states expect to try again next year.
