Hochul signs AI safety bill

The amended New York measure aims to prevent powerful AI models from unleashing critical harm.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Friday signed a closely watched artificial intelligence safety bill after striking an agreement with lawmakers to narrow the measure’s scope. 

It is now the second state to enact a law aimed at the largest, most powerful AI systems — known as frontier models — with the goal of preventing catastrophic harm.
