4 issues topping state environmental agendas in ‘26

States are focusing on affordability as electricity prices increase.

State lawmakers on both sides of the aisle will seek to advance policies next year to address environmental issues, including climate superfunds, pipelines, PFAS and extended producer responsibility.

The push comes as states focus on affordability amid a surge in electricity demand that has driven prices higher. Electricity prices have risen 6.9% year over year, according to the most recent consumer price index — more than double the 2.7% inflation rate for all goods and services.
