Abbott vetoes THC ban, calls special session

The governor wants to enact a regulatory framework that protects public safety and aligns with federal law.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) on Sunday vetoed legislation that would have banned products containing the active ingredient in marijuana, citing constitutional challenges that he said would lead to years of litigation and delayed enforcement.

In a veto message, Abbott said he was concerned the bill went further than federal law in banning products that contain any amount of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the psychoactive compound in marijuana. He cited a similar law approved in Arkansas that was subsequently struck down in federal court.
