ACA enrollment drops as subsidy expiration drives people off plans

Numbers are coming into greater focus now that deadlines have passed for enrollees to pay their first bills.

Far fewer people are paying for Affordable Care Act plans this year after the expiration of the federal tax subsidies that drove enrollment to record highs, according to data that officials from eight states provided exclusively to Pluribus News. 

More than 129,000 fewer people across the states — which all run their own healthcare marketplaces — were enrolled and paying for coverage as of May 1 or close to it, a 7.7% decline from the same time last year.
