Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey (R) formally called the legislature back to Montgomery for a special session aimed at redrawing the state’s congressional district lines, three weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the existing lines violated the Voting Rights Act.
In a proclamation issued Tuesday, Ivey ordered the legislature to go back to the drawing board on July 17, days before a July 21 district court deadline to come into compliance ahead of the 2024 elections.
