Analysis: How Democrats flipped the script in Trump’s redistricting wars

The party could end the unprecedented mid-decade cycle of redrawing maps with the advantage.

Virginia voters on Tuesday approved a constitutional amendment redrawing the state’s congressional district lines in favor of Democrats, handing the party a map that will net them as many as four seats in the narrow fight for control of the U.S. House of Representatives.

If the amendment survives a pending challenge at the state Supreme Court, it will cap a remarkable turnaround for the party that long scorned the evils of gerrymandering: After decades of bringing knives to the redistricting gun fight, Democrats showed up this year with a bazooka.
