Another blue state gives ride-hailing drivers unionization rights

Illinois will join California and Massachusetts when a recently passed bill is signed.

Illinois is poised to join California and Massachusetts in allowing ride-hailing drivers for companies like Lyft and Uber to unionize, signaling growing momentum for gig worker rights in Democratic-led states.

Before adjourning early Monday, lawmakers gave final approval to a bill that would pave the way for Illinois gig drivers to form a union and negotiate pay, benefits and working conditions while remaining independent contractors. Gov. JB Pritzker, a Democrat, is expected to sign the measure.
