Blue states consider gas appliance limits

Lawmakers are concerned about health- and climate-related problems associated with emissions.

Democratic-led legislatures in New York and Illinois are poised to advance limitations on gas appliances, as Republican-led states and gas advocates look to preserve consumers’ options. 

New York lawmakers are putting the finishing touches on the state budget, which is expected to include a first-of-its-kind legislative ban on gas appliances in new construction. Illinois is set to consider legislation to require gas stoves sold in the state to display a health warning label.
