Calif. lawmakers unveil sweeping crackdown on AI chatbots to protect kids

A powerhouse trio of California lawmakers has introduced unique and highly anticipated legislation to further regulate artificial intelligence companion chatbots with the goal of protecting minors from harm.

Assemblymembers Buffy Wicks and Rebecca Bauer-Kahan and Sen. Steve Padilla, all Democratic committee chairs, are joint authors of the legislation in both chambers that would implement expanded safeguards to ensure child safety risks are addressed.
