California lawmakers on Thursday adopted legislation to allow car buyers up to three days to back out of a purchase without financial penalties, a first-in-the-nation measure designed to save consumers hundreds of millions of dollars.
The measure, the Combating Auto Retail Scams Act, would require auto dealers to disclose a total price up front and in advertising to increase price transparency. It would prohibit dealers from selling add-on products such as nitrogen-filled tires, oil change packages for electric vehicles that don’t require oil, and surface protection that voids a manufacturer’s warranty.
