California blocks local governments from enforcing voter ID

It was one of several clashes this year between the state and Huntington Beach.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed a bill this week that prohibits a local government from enacting or enforcing any voter identification requirement.

Sen. Dave Min (D) introduced the bill in response to Huntington Beach voters’ approval of an amendment to the city charter in March that allows for a voter ID requirement for municipal elections, regardless of state law.
