California debates reinstating strict Medicaid asset limits

There is growing pressure on state leaders nationwide to cut healthcare spending.

California in 2024 became the first state to allow low-income seniors and people with disabilities to qualify for Medicaid regardless of their savings.

It was a short-lived experiment. In response to the jump in senior enrollment and program spending, state leaders last year agreed to impose a generous asset limit to shrink enrollment and save money.
