California lawmakers launch special session to address gas price spikes

The California Assembly kicked off a special session to consider Gov. Gavin Newsom’s (D) proposal to avoid gas price spikes.

The first-in-the-nation bill to require petroleum refiners to maintain a minimum fuel reserve to avoid supply shortage during maintenance shutdowns came in response to record-high gas prices California suffered in 2022. It was informed by a new gas prices watchdog within the California Energy Commission that found that refinery maintenance was causing price spikes.
