California leads in top-earning households, as Florida and Texas gain

More than 800,000 U.S. households earned at least $1 million in 2022.

California has remained home to the greatest share of top-earning U.S. households over the past 15 years, but states such as New York and New Jersey are losing ground to Florida, Texas and others, federal data shows.

Although the number of New York households earning more than $1 million nearly doubled from tax year 2010 to 2022, other states added millionaire families at a faster rate, according to a recent analysis by the Citizens Budget Commission, a New York-based nonpartisan think tank.
