California legislators pass environment and energy package

It extends the state’s cap-and-trade program through 2045.

California lawmakers approved a package of energy and environment measures, including an extension of the state’s cap-and-trade program, that provides Democratic leaders a major victory. 

The package was designed to address energy affordability, with the state’s gas and electricity prices consistently among the highest in the nation. And it comes as California seeks to preserve its carbon reduction policies that have made it a leader among states in addressing climate change.
