California nonprofit pushes voluntary AI safety certification legislation

A California-headquartered nonprofit co-founded by Colorado’s first cannabis czar is pushing legislation in several states this year to establish a voluntary artificial intelligence safety and security certification process.

The concept from Fathom.org is modeled on the 129-year-old Underwriters Laboratories certification for light bulbs. It is being touted as an alternative to state regulation of AI developers and deployers.
