Dems feel political tailwinds ahead of midterm elections

Many of the states with the most closely divided legislatures overlap with the presidential battleground.

Fresh off electoral victories in Virginia and New Jersey and buoyed by historical trends, Democrats are optimistic heading into a midterm election year that provides the party one of the best chances in recent memory to secure substantial gains in state legislative elections.

Voters in 46 states will elect more than 6,100 state-level lawmakers in 2026, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Both Democrats and Republicans are lining up expensive campaigns and comprehensive rosters of candidates in their targeted states.
